A Third Act – “I’ve finished the second act of my new novel” by John Irving

Dear Readers,

I’ve finished the second act of my new novel, Darkness as a Bride. It is a story told in three acts. First draft pages pile up as I progress through the novel – my desk is lined with stacks of paper. I took a photo of the last four hand-written chapters in Act II; as you can see, the collection of pages is twice as tall as my longest published novel, Until I Find You. The photo gives you some indication of how much I revise as I go (there are many insert pages), and how large my handwriting has gotten over the years. When I’ve finished a substantial number of first draft pages, they’re stored away in boxes to clear space on my desk. Now I’m turning my attention to Act III.
